The phenomenal Gregory Porter is back with a new album, and it was born a classic. The sultry baritone is fast becoming a staple on the jazz scene. Porter is a two-time Grammy-award winner for his LP’s “Liquid Spirit” and “Take Me to the Alley.” For the jazz singer’s fifth album, Porter eloquently covers 12 of his favorite Nat “King” Cole standards (Nat ‘King’ Cole & Me). From “Smile” to “The Christmas Song,” one of Nat ‘King’ Coles most well-known tunes, Porter takes listeners back to a time when the holidays were joyous and merry.

Porter, however, started out pursuing a career in football as a lineman for San Diego. After an injury, though, he had to hang up the cleats. With musical influences from his mother and grandmother, the natural path was to use his voice for song. “I came to jazz because I found myself in it. I heard the way my mother and grandmother used to moan all day long,” he says.

Porter’s first professional foray into music was as an original cast member of “It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues.” Porter played New York City’s jazz clubs before releasing his first album, “Water,” to critical acclaim. The Grammy committee nominated that record for Best Jazz vocal album.

Be sure to catch Gregory Porter on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tonight on CBS. (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Tuesday, November 21st, 11:35 pm E/10:35 pm C on CBS.)
